Leviathan

Since I’m almost done with Bandit and have been stuck on level 25 for awhile, I decided to move to the next WarGame called Leviathan. Leviathan is a wargame that has been rescued from the demise of intruded.net, previously hosted on leviathan.intruded.net. Thanks to adc, morla and reth for their help in resurrecting this game!

Leviathan LEVEL 0

Level 0 Goal: There is no information for this level, intentionally.

What I Did: ssh into the home directory. List files using ls -la and then used cd to see what the directory .backup held. Listed the files and saw that the directory held a file called bookmarks.html. After cat’ing the file, there really wasn’t anything of use I could note right away. I decided to use the grep command to search for leviathan1 since that was the password I needed to move on. I was returned a bookmark containing the password for Levianthan1.

What I Did: A quick ls -l of the home directory gave me an 32-bin LSB executable file called check. When running the file, I was told to enter a password. I entered test as the password to see what would occur and the program responded with “Wrong password, Good Bye …“ I decided to see what I could find out using the command ltrace which would intercept and record the processes made in the program. I quickly pressed enter to proceed through the different processes and was promptly returned the string strcmp(“\n\n\n”, “sex”). It appeared that sex was the password it was looking for, so I ran the file again and typed in the password sex. I was presented with a shell and a quick run of whoami told me I was leviathan2. From here I used the cat command on /etc/leviathan_pass/leviathan2 to obtain the password for leviathan2.
